from positioning to funnel: where to start.

Strategy comes before execution: how to choose a defensible positioning and design a sales funnel that holds over time.

Why you never start with the website

When a business decides to "get a website" or "open social accounts", it has usually already skipped the most important step. A website is a means; a positioning is a choice. And choices come before means. Starting with execution and no strategy is the reason so many digital investments produce nothing: they communicate something that was never decided.

Positioning answers a simple, uncomfortable question: why should a client choose you, when they could choose anyone? If the answer is "quality and courtesy", that isn't a positioning: it's what everyone says.

A defensible positioning

A positioning works when it is true (rooted in what you can genuinely do), relevant (it solves a problem the client actually feels) and hard to copy. To find it you work along three axes: what you do better than your competitors, who you do it for, and what proof you can bring. Proof is what separates a promise from a slogan.

The funnel: from positioning to system

Once the promise is defined, the funnel is the journey that turns a stranger into a client — and then into a loyal one. The four classic stages (awareness, consideration, decision, loyalty) serve one purpose only: understanding where value is being lost. Some businesses have plenty of traffic and few enquiries (a conversion problem), some have enquiries but little visibility (an awareness problem), some sell only once (a loyalty problem).

The funnel is not a marketing diagram: it is a diagnostic tool. By measuring every step, investment stops being spend-by-gut-feeling and becomes an adjustable lever.

Where to start tomorrow morning

Three questions to begin with: what is the sentence a satisfied client would use to describe you to a friend? At which point of the journey do you lose the most contacts? Which number, if it doubled, would genuinely change your year? If you can't answer the third, the first step isn't a campaign: it's a diagnosis.

Awareness — they discover you Consideration — they weigh you up Decision — they choose you Loyalty — they come back 100%where is it lost?

In short
  • Positioning comes before means: it's a choice, not a website.
  • A promise without proof is a slogan.
  • The funnel exists to show where value is lost, stage by stage.
  • You start with a diagnosis, not a campaign.

quick answers.

Where do you start with a marketing strategy?

With positioning, not with the website or social media: first you decide why a client should choose you, then you choose the means to communicate it.

What is a defensible positioning?

A promise that is true, relevant to the client and hard to copy, backed by concrete proof: without proof it is just a slogan.

What is a sales funnel really for?

For diagnosing where value is lost along the client journey — visibility, conversion or loyalty — so you invest where it is needed.
